WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) was originally formed, in 1969, as the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association; which was so named after the esteemed physician Dr. Harry Benjamin who was the first physician to work with gender dysphoric people.
Every two years the organization met, sometimes secretly, to discuss the “aims, functions and clinical problems of a gender identity unit”. (Dewhurst) It wasn’t until 2007 when the name was officially changed to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health.
